I got accepted by the HPAIR project, which hold by The Harvard University. It is a conference about Asian countries’ international relations. It holds once a year in a different city in Asia. There will be around 500 students from different Asian countries to attend the conference. (Details: http://www.hpair.org/) I will be attend the media panel during the conference. Actually, I was not very into media thing, I am a marketing major student but more focus on entrepreneurship and international development so before I leave i had some conversation with my friends to talk about media and which turn out that we had so many critical opinions and good understandings.
What is media?
Newspaper, TV, radio, social media (Facebook, twitter)?
and then among all of these, the social media (I mean Facebook, twitte, etc.) is the most popular media in our life and all these social medias are supported by Internet. Then, we had some discussion about Internet.
1.Should people protect themselves in the internet world or their country should protect them?
We think the country should protect their citizens so then we can see actually there are some countries are doing this now, such as, China. The reason is the internet world is too big and there were not any international rules can protect people from these giant big internet companies.
However, what I was thinking is that “Does protection work? or maybe we should take the defensive and some actions. The reason why I was thinking like that is because first, most big internet or social media companies are from America, such as Facebook and google. We can hardly against with them because they are so huge and the internet is unlimited. Then, why don’t we as a small country also develop these giant internet or social media website to influence American people’s life? If they can steal some information from these small countries, then why these small countries can not develop another giant social media to steal their information? In addition, it is really difficult to say something about moral if the question is too big. I mean personally I don’t want to steal other people’s information but I have no choices. If we will have a war, then it will be a competition in internet world or as so many people knows it will about technology.
2. Did all these social media make people more close or more separate?
I remember in my Nonprofit financial class, my professor told us that these days American young people who has car is less compare before, the reason is about social media. Since people have skype or Facebook, you don’t need to REALLY meet your friends, you can meet them online. I think it is good because when I am thinking my friend is leaving soon these days, she will be back to Korea and then how can I keep the contact with her. The good thing is there was something called “Kakaotalk”, a korean app, which is similar to Weixin; so even she will be in Korea in the future but I can still connect with her. However, I heard the news that there were so many people got divorced because of Facebook. Also, I guess most couple had arguments because one of them did not text another one sooner or you did not change the status at Facebook that shows you are not single! lol!~~
3. Should we believe the international news in Internet?
I remember when I was in Japan last August, which was the time that China and Japan began to have the conflict about the Diaoyu Island. All of these news that I heard is so different, even opposite. The was one news in Japan about all the military airplanes were practicing above Okinawa’s sky, the local news was saying that, Okinawa people are really really hate these practices because these planes always failed and dropped, then killed people in Okinawa. At another side, the Chinese news was saying that Americans are protecting Japan for the Diaoyu Island. OMG, if you only read these you cannot decide which one is right and which one is not. I am very sure America also will report this news in a totally different way!
my suggestion: believe these good international news and ignore those bad ones. However, then our next questions came out.
4. Does the social media report good news? who leads or decides the direction of news? Publish agency or readers?
I think the answer is NO, they never or less report good news except if you are a celebrity, then you may see some good news, such as they got married. However, I think they more prefer to write something about they will get divorced. lol!~~ because no one wants to hear GOOD news, only these bad and dirty news cause people’s attentions! and who is leading the direction? You know, I know. That’s us.
5. By controlling another country’s internet world could they control the country?
In my own opinion, YES. You never knows how the internet betrayed you. Even now, I am writing these, people may selling all my opinions in the future or steal my personal information. By registering this website, they knew my name, my email address, where am I from, etc. Then, I just had the thoughts, how we should protect ourselves. We need speak out. Like now what I am doing, write down and spread the news to other people, let them have the awareness about social media or Internet.
Moreover, Internet also creates some new behaviors such as”posting pictures online, chatting people online, even date people online …” what’s behind these behaviors? what makes people have all these behaviors? why you want to post pictures online? I think this can be a very big research! anyone wants to work with me to find some reasons?
For me, Internet is like a monopoly in business. There was no competitors are competing with it and my own belief is that if something or someone is too strong and nothing can compete with them, it will die one day. Then, I guess Internet will bring more bad effects in the future than good effects. Good luck, everyone! We are already in this trap.
